Small things, disproportionate effect

These are the two cheapest items we sell and among the most useful, because they change an outfit without changing the clothes.

A satin knot headband does two jobs at once. It finishes a look — a printed headband against a plain dress reads deliberate in a way a plain one does not — and it solves hair on a day you have not had time to do anything with it. For a garden party, a christening or the races, it is the least effort-to-effect ratio available.

Square retro sunglasses with a transparent frame are the summer equivalent. A clear frame suits more face shapes and skin tones than a black one, because there is nothing to clash with, and UV400 means genuine protection rather than tinted plastic.

How to use them

The headband works best against a plain or small-print dress, where it can be the pattern in the outfit. Against a large floral it competes. The leopard print is a neutral in practice — it sits with black, brown, beige, green and pink without effort.

Sunglasses are the one accessory worth carrying to every daytime event in Britain, on the reasonable assumption that the weather will do something unexpected.
