The most useful dress in a British summer

A floral midi dress covers more occasions than anything else we make. A garden party, a christening, a day at the races, a summer wedding, a lunch, a holiday. It is dressy enough for an invitation and relaxed enough for a Saturday, and it needs almost nothing to go with it.

Ten of these fifteen are midi and all fifteen are cut for summer. Fourteen work as holiday pieces.

Choosing a print

The scale of the print does more work than the colour.

Small, dense repeats — vintage-inspired ditsy florals — read more formal and more classic. They photograph well at a distance and are the safer choice for an event where you do not know the dress code.

Large painterly blooms read more relaxed and more current. Better for a holiday or a garden lunch than a formal invitation, and more striking in close photographs.

Boho and geometric prints — three styles here — sit apart from both. They are the holiday answer rather than the occasion one.

The practical advantage of any print: it hides everything a plain fabric shows. Sun cream, a spilled drink, sea water, a crease from sitting. If you are buying one dress to wear across a whole holiday, buy the printed one.

Shape

Six are A-line, which is the most forgiving cut we carry and the easiest to wear for a full day. The rest are ruched, strappy or fit-and-flare. Twelve are sleeveless.

For the races or a stricter dress code, check the enclosure rules before ordering — several require a hem on or below the knee and a strap of a minimum width, and our midi styles with a proper strap clear both.

Sizing

This edit runs XXS to XXXL, the widest range we offer, with full measurements in centimetres on the size guide. Our dresses are true to size.

Most of these are woven cotton blends and chiffon rather than stretch, so between two sizes take the larger. For the A-line styles, order to your bust. For the ruched and fitted ones, order to your hip.

On length: our midi dresses are cut for around 5'7", so they sit lower on a petite frame — often near the ankle, which many people prefer with a flat sandal.
