What a night out actually demands

The dress that looks best in the mirror at seven is not always the one you want at one in the morning. A going out dress has to survive a queue in the cold, a crowded bar, three hours of standing and a taxi home — and it has to do that without needing to be adjusted every ten minutes.

That is the filter we have used here. Twenty-four of these are bodycon, but the ruched versions are the ones we would point you to first: the gathering gives when you sit and move, where a flat stretch panel does not.

What we carry

Sixteen maxi and twelve mini, plus eight co-ord sets and seven pairs of boots. Nine are lace, seven sequin, seven embellished. Seventeen are backless or open-backed and eight have cut-out detail.

Twenty are black — the reliable choice — with green, brown, white and champagne beige behind it. Nine have long sleeves, which in Britain is the difference between wearing a coat all night and not.

Mini or maxi

A mini is the classic night-out length and the one most people reach for. It photographs sharply and it is easy to move in. The trade-off is the sit-down test: check it on a hard chair at home rather than in a bar.

A maxi is the underrated option. It reads more considered, it is warmer, and with a slit it moves just as well. If you are going somewhere with a dress code or somewhere you will be photographed a lot, the maxi is usually the better call.

The practical checklist

  • Seamless underwear — a fitted dress shows every edge.
  • Check the back — seventeen of these are backless, which means a stick-on bra or one of the styles with a built-in one.
  • Shoes you can stand in — our block-heel and platform boots are here for that reason. A heel you take off at midnight was the wrong heel.
  • A sleeve or a strap you trust — strapless is a commitment you re-honour all night.

Sizing

These run XS to XL, with boots in UK 2 to 9, and full measurements in centimetres on the size guide. Our pieces are true to size.

For a bodycon cut, order to your hip measurement rather than your dress size. In stretch fabric take your usual size — sizing up makes it bag rather than skim.
