Why satin is the occasion fabric

A satin dress does something no other fabric manages: it holds a clean, uninterrupted line and catches light along it. In a dim reception room, that is the difference between a dress that reads expensive and one that disappears. Seventeen of these eighteen are tagged for evening, and that is not an accident.

It also photographs richer in colour than matte fabric. A deep green or burgundy satin reads as a proper colour under warm lighting where the same shade in jersey reads flat.

The honest trade-offs

Satin has almost no stretch, so it is the least forgiving fabric we carry. It shows every line underneath, and it creases if you sit for a long time in it. None of that is a fault — it is what gives satin its drape — but it decides how you should buy and wear one.

Three things follow. Wear seamless underwear, always. Choose ruched or draped styles over flat-panel ones if you will be seated for hours, because gathering hides creasing where a smooth panel shows it. And hang it rather than folding it.

What we carry

Sixteen maxi, mostly mermaid and column cuts. Seven are one-shoulder, which is the neckline satin suits best because the fabric drapes cleanly from a single point. Eight are backless or open-backed, three are cowl-neck, three halter.

Eight are tagged for wedding guests and five for bridesmaids, so a good part of this edit is wedding-ready. Colour runs black at six, then yellow at four, with white, green, red, blue and pink behind.

Sizing satin

These run XS to L in letter sizes and UK 6 to 16 in the numeric ones, with full measurements in centimetres on the size guide.

Between two sizes, always take the larger in satin. It is the fabric with the least give in the shop, and a satin dress that is fractionally tight will pull visibly across the hip and stomach in a way jersey never does. For a mermaid cut, order to your hip measurement rather than your dress size.

Our dresses are true to size, but satin is the one place where being honest with your measurements matters more than the number on the label.

UK delivery is free on every order with no minimum spend, and takes around seven working days. Returns are free within 14 days with a prepaid label in the box. On satin especially, ordering two sizes and returning one is the sensible approach.
