The piece that makes the rest of the wardrobe work

We are a dress shop, and this is the edit that extends everything else in it. A British occasion is rarely warm enough for a dress alone, and the difference between an outfit and a dress plus whatever coat was by the door is entirely this category.

The rule is simple: the layer should be cut to sit over an occasion piece, not fight it. A boxy work jacket over a satin maxi reads like two separate decisions. A longline blazer or a sleeveless waistcoat follows the same line as the dress underneath.

What we carry

  • Tailored blazers — a notched-lapel open front and a waist-cinching single button. The single button version is the more flattering over a dress because it defines the waist rather than hiding it.
  • Longline waistcoats — three styles, sleeveless. The most useful thing here for spring and autumn: warmth through the body, arms free, and no bulk at the shoulder to ruin a neckline.
  • Relaxed jackets — a turn-down collar pocket jacket and a V-neck button-front longline. Everyday rather than occasion.
  • Outerwear — a hooded zip-through windproof, which is the practical one.

Five are cut for autumn and five for spring, which is honest about what this edit is: shoulder-season layering rather than deep winter coats.

Colour

Black, brown, beige, blue, pink and grey. Beige and brown are the two worth pointing at — they sit better over the greens, pinks and champagne tones in our dresses than black does, and black over black is harder to make look deliberate than people expect.

Sizing

These run XS to XXXL, the widest range in the shop after the holiday edit, with full measurements in centimetres on the size guide.

Size a layer to what goes under it. If you will wear a blazer over a fitted dress only, take your usual size. If you want it over a knit as well, take the larger of two sizes — a blazer that pulls across the back when you move is the most common fit problem in this category, and it shows immediately in photographs.

For the waistcoats, size to your bust. For the relaxed jackets, your usual size is right since they are cut loose by design.
