The colour worth the risk

A yellow dress is the boldest thing most people will wear to a summer occasion, and it is the one that gets remembered. It also photographs better than almost any colour in daylight, where it holds its saturation while paler shades wash out and darker ones flatten.

The shade decides everything. Butter yellow is the soft, creamy one that has moved from niche to everywhere in the last two seasons — it behaves almost like a neutral and suits far more people than a bright does. Lemon and marigold are the saturated ones: striking, summery and best kept to a clean silhouette.

What we carry

Four are maxi. Four are tagged for evening and four for parties, so this edit leans dressier than the other colour collections — two are satin, one is sequin, two are embellished.

The pieces run from a ruffle-trim sequin jacquard and a cowl-neck backless satin maxi through to an embroidered cut-out lace-up mini and a sleeveless floral print maxi. Two are cut for wedding guests, two are backless.

Wearing yellow well

Two things make the difference. Keep accessories neutral — tan, nude, gold or champagne. Yellow with black reads harsh in daylight, and yellow with silver reads cold. And choose the shade against your skin rather than against the photograph: butter and cream-yellows suit cooler tones, while marigold and mustard suit warmer ones.

For a wedding, yellow is entirely safe as a guest colour and is rarely used by bridal parties, which makes it one of the lowest-risk choices for avoiding an accidental match.

Sizing

These run XS to XL, with full measurements in centimetres on the size guide. Our dresses are true to size.

Between two sizes, take the larger in satin, which has the least give of anything here. For the bodycon and mermaid cuts, order to your hip measurement rather than your dress size.

One note on pale yellow specifically: like white, it is less opaque than darker colours. Wear nude underwear rather than white, which shows through pale fabric more clearly than any other shade.
