What a corset dress actually does

A corset dress is not just a fitted dress with visible seaming. The bodice is structured — boned, panelled or bandage-woven — so it holds its own shape rather than relying on your body to give it one. That is what creates the defined waist, and it is why a corset dress looks the same at midnight as it did at seven.

The trade-off is honest: structure means less give. A corset bodice does not stretch to accommodate a large meal or a long night of sitting. Buy it for an evening you will spend mostly upright.

Sizing a structured bodice

This matters more here than anywhere else in the shop, because a corset has no stretch to rescue a wrong size.

Between two sizes, take the larger. A corset that is slightly loose can be worn comfortably all evening; one that is slightly tight cannot be worn at all after an hour, and no amount of wanting it to fit changes that.

What to wear underneath
