Why the halter neck works

It is the most quietly flattering neckline we carry, and the reason is structural. A halter takes the weight through the neck rather than the shoulders, which lifts and supports without a strap showing anywhere. It leaves the shoulders and upper back bare, which lengthens the whole line of the body. And it frames the collarbone, which photographs better than almost any other neckline.

It also solves a specific problem: it gives you real support and coverage at the front while leaving the back open. Eight of these styles are backless for exactly that reason — the neckline is doing the structural work, so the back is free.

What we carry

Fourteen are maxi, three are mini. Twelve are tagged for evening and twelve for parties, so this is largely an occasion edit.

By fabric: three satin, three lace, two chiffon, two sequin. By cut: seven bodycon, five ruched. Eight are black, with brown, white, gold, red, green, beige and yellow behind.

The satin mermaid styles are the formal end — weddings, black tie, evening receptions. The sequin and rhinestone mesh styles are the party end. The floral chiffon is the daytime one.

Who it suits

A halter neck is the most reliable neckline for a fuller bust, because the support comes from above rather than from a band. It is also good for broader shoulders, which it narrows visually by drawing the eye inward to the neck.

The one honest caveat: a halter puts weight on the back of the neck. Over a long evening in a heavy fabric, that is noticeable. If you know you are sensitive to it, choose the chiffon and lighter styles here over the beaded ones, and look for a tie-back rather than a fixed band because you can adjust the tension through the night.

What to wear underneath

This is the practical question with any halter. Most of these styles are cut to be worn without a bra, and several have a built-in one — the product page will say. For the rest, a stick-on bra or a halter-convertible style is the answer. A regular bra will show at the shoulder and undo the whole point of the neckline.

Sizing

These run XS to XXL, with a couple of styles in UK numeric sizing, and full measurements in centimetres on the size guide. Our dresses are true to size.

Size to your bust for a halter — it is the measurement the neckline has to accommodate. Between two sizes, take the larger in satin and your usual size in anything with stretch. For the fitted and mermaid cuts, check your hip measurement too, since that is where a close cut will bind if anywhere.
