When sequins are right

A sequin dress has a narrower brief than most people give it, and that is exactly why it works when it works. Sequins are made for artificial light. In a dim room they catch every lamp in the place and move with you. In daylight they read heavy, and in a photograph taken with flash they can flare.

So: Christmas parties, New Year, milestone birthdays, evening receptions, after-parties. Not a daytime wedding, not the races, not a lunch.

Within that brief, sequins are the least risky bold choice there is. Nobody has ever looked at a sequin dress at a party and thought it was too much effort.

Colours run purple, green, black, pink, red, brown, gold and yellow. Gold and purple are the two that read most distinctly under warm party lighting; black sequin is the safest and the most re-wearable.

How to wear one without it wearing you

One rule covers most of it: if the dress sparkles, nothing else should. Plain shoes, minimal jewellery, no printed bag. A sequin dress is already the whole outfit and the most common mistake is adding to it.

The second rule is about shape. A fully sequinned fabric adds visual volume, so a cut that skims rather than clings usually photographs better than a very fitted one, unless the sequins are laid on a stretch base. Seven of these styles are embellished rather than fully sequinned, which gives you the sparkle with less weight.

The practical side nobody mentions

Sequin fabric is heavier than it looks, and a floor-length sequin gown carries real weight on the shoulders over a long evening. If you are standing for hours, the mini and midi styles are more comfortable than the maxi ones.

Sequins also catch on tights, upholstery and other people's clothing. Sit carefully in a car, and if you are dancing closely, expect a few threads. This is normal for the fabric rather than a fault.

Care is straightforward: never iron directly onto sequins, hang rather than fold, and follow the label — most sequin pieces are specialist clean only.

Sizing

These run XS to XXL, and a smaller group in UK 8 to 16, with full measurements in centimetres on the size guide. Our dresses are true to size.

Sequin bases have less give than plain jersey, so between two sizes take the larger. For a bodycon sequin cut, order to your hip measurement rather than your dress size.

Delivery and returns

UK delivery is free on every order with no minimum spend, and takes around seven working days. Returns are free within 14 days with a prepaid label in the box. In December, order early — party season moves quickly and a calm exchange beats a rushed one.
