The brief nobody writes down

A date night dress has a harder job than a party dress. It has to look considered without looking like you tried for three hours. It has to work across a table rather than on a dance floor. And it has to be comfortable enough that you forget about it, because the whole evening depends on you paying attention to someone else.

That last point rules out more dresses than anything else. A strapless you keep pulling up, or a bodice that bites when you sit down to eat, will decide how the evening goes.

What we carry

Six are mini and two midi. Six are lace, six are bodycon, and four have long sleeves. Four are black, two white, with blue, pink and yellow behind.

The lace styles are the ones we would point to first. Lace reads dressed-up without reading formal, it photographs well in restaurant lighting, and a sheer sleeve gives you coverage without heat in a warm room.

First date, or fifth

For a first date, choose the piece you have worn before or something close to it. Confidence comes from knowing how a dress behaves when you sit, reach and stand, and a first date is a bad place to find out. The A-line and ruched styles here are the low-risk options.

For a dinner, avoid anything with a rigid bodice. You are going to eat. The ruched and stretch styles give where a bandage or corset does not.

For drinks or something later, the bodycon and cut-out styles are right — you will be standing, and they photograph sharply.

Sizing

These run XS to XXL, with full measurements in centimetres on the size guide. Our dresses are true to size.

For a bodycon cut, order to your hip measurement rather than your dress size. In lace and bandage fabrics, which have little give, take the larger of two sizes. In stretch, take your usual.

Delivery and returns

UK delivery is free on every order with no minimum spend, and takes around seven working days. Returns are free within 14 days with a prepaid label in the box, so ordering two sizes and sending one back costs you nothing.
