When white is yours

A white dress carries more meaning than any other colour, and knowing which occasion you are dressing for decides everything.

It is yours at your own wedding, your hen, your rehearsal dinner, your engagement party, a christening as the mother, a graduation, a milestone birthday, and every day of a holiday.

It is not yours as a guest at someone else's wedding. That rule has not softened, and no fabric or print gets around it. If you are attending rather than marrying, wedding guest dresses is the right edit.

What we carry

Five of the nine are lace, which is what makes them read as occasion pieces rather than summer basics. Four are maxi and four are mini, with a midi in between.

The formal end: a lace-strap mermaid with a court train, a halter-neck lace mermaid, and a long-sleeve draped maxi. These are the ones that work for a register office ceremony, an intimate wedding, or a second dress for the evening.

The lighter end: lace-trim cut-out A-line minis and an embroidered lace-up mini. Holidays, birthdays, hen parties.

The practical truth about white

Two things decide whether a white dress works, and neither is the cut.

The lining. White fabric is translucent in daylight and worse under flash. Every white dress you own should be checked in bright light before the day, not on it. Ours are lined, but the underwear still matters — nude or matched to your skin tone, never white, which shows more clearly through white fabric than any other colour.

The upkeep. White shows everything: makeup on the neckline, sun cream, a spilled drink. Put the dress on last, after makeup and hair. If it is a holiday piece, expect to wash it more often than anything else in the case.

Sizing

These run XS to XL, with two styles in UK 6 to 14, and full measurements in centimetres on the size guide. Our dresses are true to size.

Between two sizes, take the larger in lace and satin, which have little give, and your usual size in anything with stretch. For a mermaid cut, order to your hip measurement rather than your dress size.

One note specific to white: a fitted white dress shows every seam and edge underneath it, so a size that is fractionally too small reads far more obviously in white than in black. If in doubt, take the larger.

UK delivery is free on every order with no minimum spend, and takes around seven working days. Returns are free within 14 days with a prepaid label in the box, so if you are between two sizes, order both and send one back at no cost.
