The most practical occasion dress in Britain

A long sleeve dress solves the problem every British event creates: the venue is warm, the journey is cold, and no coat you own works with the outfit. Sleeves mean you arrive and leave looking the same as you did inside.

They also extend the wearing season of an occasion dress by about six months. A sleeveless satin maxi is a May-to-September purchase. The same dress with a sleeve works at a December wedding and a January party.

Sheer or solid

The choice that matters most here, and it is not about warmth.

Sheer sleeves — lace and mesh, seven of these eleven styles — give you coverage without heat. This is the option for a crowded party or a warm venue where a solid sleeve would be unbearable. They also read dressier: a sheer lace sleeve is a decorative element, not just a practical one.

Solid sleeves give real warmth and a cleaner line. Better for genuinely cold events and for anyone who wants coverage rather than the suggestion of it.

What we carry

Six are mini and four maxi. Four are sequin, four lace, three mesh, three high-neck. Five are black, then blue, purple, white and green.

Eight are tagged for parties and six for nights out, so this leans festive rather than formal — which is right, since December is when a sleeve earns its place.

Sleeve shapes, briefly

A fitted sleeve keeps the line clean and works under a coat. A flare or lantern sleeve adds movement and softens the shoulder, and reads more romantic. A bandage or bodycon sleeve holds firm and suits a fitted dress. Choose by what you will do with your arms: if you will be eating at a table, a wide flare sleeve is a genuine nuisance.

Sizing

These run XS to XXXL, with a couple in UK numeric sizing, and full measurements in centimetres on the size guide. Our dresses are true to size.

Sleeves are where a size that is fractionally too small shows first — across the upper arm and shoulder. If you are between sizes, take the larger, particularly in lace and bandage fabrics with little give. In stretch mesh, your usual size is right.

Delivery and returns

UK delivery is free on every order with no minimum spend, and takes around seven working days. Returns are free within 14 days with a prepaid label in the box.
