The neckline that does the most with the least

A one shoulder dress is the most requested occasion neckline of recent seasons, and it earns it. The asymmetry draws the eye diagonally across the body, which lengthens the whole line. It leaves one shoulder and arm bare without the exposure of a strapless. And because the fabric drapes from a single point, it creates folds that a symmetrical neckline never does — which is why satin suits it better than anything else.

It is also the shape that photographs most reliably. A straight-across neckline can read flat head-on; an asymmetric one always has movement in it.

What we carry

Seven are satin and two chiffon. Ten are floor-length, mostly draped, ruched or pleated. Six are cut for wedding guests and four for bridesmaids, which tells you where this neckline lives.

Green runs to four styles, then blue and yellow at two each. Three are backless, four bodycon.

Draped, ruched or pleated

Draped is the softest, and the most forgiving. Fabric falls from the shoulder in loose folds that skim rather than cling.

Ruched gathers through the waist, which smooths the middle and adds a layer of fabric where most people want one. The most flattering of the three for a long evening.

Pleated is the sharpest and most formal, with defined folds that hold their shape. Best in a structured satin and for a seated event, since pleats crease less than smooth fabric.

What to wear underneath

A one shoulder needs either a strapless bra, a stick-on, or nothing. A regular bra will show on the bare side and undo the neckline entirely — there is no way around this. Several of these have a built-in bra and the product page says which.

Keep jewellery to the bare side or skip it. A necklace competes with an asymmetric neckline; a single earring statement works better.

Sizing

These run S to L in letter sizes and UK 6 to 26 in the numeric ones, including the wider W fittings. Full measurements in centimetres are on the size guide.

Our dresses are true to size. Order to your bust, since that is what the single strap has to support. Between two sizes take the larger in satin, and for a bodycon or mermaid cut check your hip measurement too.
