The most deliberate colour you can wear

Nobody puts on a red dress by accident. It is the one colour that announces a decision, and that is exactly why it works — at a party, on a date, at Christmas, on a birthday. If you want to be remembered rather than merely correct, this is the shortcut.

It also photographs with more saturation than almost any other colour, holding its depth under both daylight and artificial light where softer shades wash out or flatten.

Where red works, and where it does not

It works at parties, on dates, at Christmas and New Year, on a birthday, at a prom, and at an evening reception. In a room of black and navy, red is the one that reads on a photograph taken from across the floor.

Be careful at a wedding. Red is not forbidden and the old superstitions are largely gone, but it draws the eye more than any other guest colour and some families still read it as a statement. If you are close to the couple, a printed red rather than a solid one is the safer version — and we carry several florals where red sits inside the pattern rather than dominating it.

Solid or print

The distinction that matters most in this edit.

Solid red — satin and sequin maxis, ruched and fishtail cuts. The evening pieces. A solid red wants a clean silhouette: red with heavy detailing tips into costume faster than any other colour.

Red in a print — boho florals, romantic prints, loose maxis with pockets. These are the daytime pieces, cut for summer, garden parties and holidays. Print carries red at a lower intensity, which makes it far easier to wear in daylight and far more forgiving of spills and creases.

What to wear it with

Keep everything else quiet. Nude, tan, gold or black accessories — never a second bright colour. Gold warms red and is the more flattering of the two metals; silver cools it and works better on the deeper, blue-based reds.

The most common mistake is matching the lip exactly to the dress. Go one shade off in either direction, or leave the lip neutral and let the dress do the work.

Sizing

These run XS to XL in letter sizes and UK 6 to 14 in the numeric ones, with full measurements in centimetres on the size guide. Our dresses are true to size.

Between two sizes, take the larger in satin and chiffon, which have little give, and your usual size in anything with stretch. For a fitted, ruched or fishtail cut, order to your hip measurement rather than your dress size.

Delivery and returns

UK delivery is free on every order with no minimum spend, and takes around seven working days. Returns are free within 14 days with a prepaid label in the box, so if you are between two sizes, order both and send one back at no cost.
