What lace does that nothing else does

A lace dress reads formal without reading stiff. That combination is rare: satin is formal but structured, chiffon is soft but casual, and lace sits precisely between them. It is why lace turns up at weddings, at christenings and at evening events in equal measure.

It also gives you coverage that is not really coverage. A sheer lace sleeve puts fabric on the arm without heat, which is the reason four of these styles have long sleeves — they solve a cold church or a December party without a jacket ruining the line.

Black lace and white lace, two different dresses

Black lace — five styles here — is the evening one. Sheer bodycon minis, mesh-and-lace bandage, high-neck flare sleeve. Dates, parties, nights out. Black lace over black lining is the most flattering combination we sell, because the pattern breaks up the surface while the colour holds the line.

White lace — four styles — is the occasion one. A halter-neck lace mermaid, a lace-strap mermaid with a train, lace-trim A-line minis. Weddings where the white is yours, hen parties, christenings and summer celebrations. Not, as ever, as a guest at someone else's wedding.

The practical side of lace

Lace is the fabric most often bought without checking the lining, and that is the mistake worth avoiding. Some of these styles are deliberately sheer at the sleeve or the back, with a lined body; others are lined throughout. The product page says which, and it changes entirely what you wear underneath.

Lace also catches. On rings, on watch straps, on other people's jewellery. Sit and move a little carefully, and if a thread pulls, do not cut it — work it back through from the reverse with a needle.

Care is straightforward: hand wash cold or specialist clean, dry flat, and never wring.

Sizing

These run XS to L in letter sizes and UK 6 to 14 in the numeric ones, with full measurements in centimetres on the size guide. Our dresses are true to size.

Lace has less give than jersey but more than satin. Between two sizes, take the larger in a woven lace and your usual size in a stretch or bandage lace. For a mermaid cut, order to your hip measurement.
